A girl was loudly discussing her crush in class today and announced "OH MY GOD, I JUST WANT TO RAPE HIM!" Of course I felt incredibly uncomfortable, but every single other person in class laughed. What am I supposed to do in a situation like that, where I'd be taken as a joke and judged as humorless and uptight to say anything about it? When literally nobody in the room would back me up?

Well, sometimes people laugh because they’re uncomfortable and they don’t know what else to do. I bet there were some other people in your class who would be grateful if you spoke out in a situation like this. It takes a lot of courage to be the only one willing to speak up, and there are worst things to be than uptight. That being said, some days you just don’t feel like you can speak out, and I don’t think you should beat yourself up for it. We can only do the best we can. There will unfortunately be other opportunities for you to call someone out on a rape joke.
